Auction 333-341 Europe & Overseas Americas (North, Central & South America) - Day 1

1867: ABN 10 c. blue, a single example used on 1875 cover to New Bedford, Mass., USA cancelled in black with "Valparaiso / Chile" despatch cds in red (July 3) alongside. Circular "PANAMA / TRANSIT" cds (July 20) in black and struck there with large "12" due marking in black on the adhesive. Reverse with British P.O. "Callao" cds (July 14) and obverse with "NEW YORK / DUE 19 CENTS" charge marking (Aug 10) in black. A fine and unusual cover....

1877: American Banknote Co. Imperforate Plate Proofs in issued colours, on very thick card, the set of five values complete. Somewhat heavily hinged but a very scarce set thus.

Postal Stationery Official Postcard Proof, printed in black, on thin off white semi glossy paper, very fresh crisp printing; similar to Figure 26 in H&G reference book page 5; rare. Ex the Brian Moorhouse Estate.

Pacific War 1879: Cover from Antofagasta with sender's cachet at left mailed to Copiapo, Chile at quintuple rate, struck with five impressions of the octagonal 10 c. "Correo / Antofagasta" frank marking in blue; reverse with COPIAPO arrival cds (January 2) in black. Some contemporary docketing explaining contents "Daniel Barrios, Cartas de Quesada i un Contrato". 1901: Newspaper-wrapper, "Master-die" proof, produced by Waterlow and Sons for the 1901 newspaper-wrapper, with value tablet blank and manuscript number 2881 in margin. The wrappers were issued with DOS CENTAVOS and VEINTE CENTAVOS inscription, minor scuffing and closed punch hole. Exceptionally rare proof, together with two unused wrappers as issued.

1910: Centenary stamps, specimen set of fifteen values, from 1 c. to 10 p. in almost exclusively marginal blocks of four (1c in strip of four), several with plate numbers, all with punched hole and overprinted "SPECIMEN" in red, a few split perfs and the odd crease and soiling in margin, although generally very fine, scarce. Ex the Brian Moorhouse Estate.

1915/1927: 4 c. brown, BALMACEDA, the unissued value, fresh and very fine unused, together with two imperf. Colour Proofs also 4 c. in olive-green and in pale-rose. Signed Huber. In addition a single strike of a similar design on large piece of unknown origin with full og. A rare quartet.

1954: Railway Centenary Souvenir sheet Scott 253 in carmine and C172 in violet on one sheet, vibrant and fresh, most attractive and rare Michel = €2'200. Ex the Brian Moorhouse Estate. Additionally, comes with three debentures for the Chilian Northern Railway Company (large format), a 3 shilling in red, a £1 in green and a £5 in blue.

French Post Offices in Chile 1867: Napoleon, 30 c. brown, with 1871 Cérès 25 c. blue, single and vertical strip of three, used on cover front, from Valparaiso to Paris, dated 16 August 1872, tied by French Post Office abroad dotted star, with "VALPARAISO PAQ.F../ 16 AOUT 72", carried on the "Ville de St. Nazaire" which replaced "Ville de Bordeaux" which was due to leave the day before on 15 August, but was damaged by a violent storm that...

1853: Perkins Bacon Proofs, reprinted in 1929 from the original Dies in black, the album page with wove paper 10 c. single example and 1 c., 10 c. (2, one is sheet marginal at left) and 20 c. in blocks of four; thick card reprints of the 5 c. in blocks of four (2), one being marginal at base. Generally fine (7 items).

1855 (April): Perkins Bacon 5c. red-brown on blued, the album page with three horizontal pairs and three vertical pairs; one marginal from left of sheet with huge margins all round and cancelled in blue (ex Gerhard Blank, lot 1105, Hubbard lot 6239); remaining four pairs all with large to huge margins all round with just one vertical pair slightly shaved. A superb page.

1857/65: Santiago P.O. printings, 5 c. carmine-red (all shades excluding the 'canela' brown shade), the collection beautifully written up on leaves with unused examples (8), used examples and multiples in wonderful condition: with singles (48) with fine range of cancellations incl. in blue; pairs (10); strips of three (6), strip of four (1), strip of five (1) and a truly wonderful strip of six (ex Galvez and Hubbar, lot 6256); a truly...
