1912, 3 October, USA, Railway accident at Westport, Conn., burnt fragment of cover with related P.O. label "The attached piece of mail matter was damaged by wreck of Bos. Spring & N Y RPO tr 53 at Westport Conn October 3 1912. The damage is regretted. Postmaster Boston Mass". Trying to make up lost time and travelling at 60 mph, the Springfield express jumped off the rails when attempting to cross from outside to inside track. The gas tank and boiler exploded, setting fire to the parlor car, and then spreading to others. Seven persons were killed.
