Recess by Perkins Bacon 1856 (Jan 1): 6 d. blue, wmk. Large Star, imperforate, two slightly overlapping used examples on 1863 double rate cover to London, Goodman correspondence, good margins all round, the adhesives cancelled in black with oval "ST. HELENA" datestamp (April 29) in black at right. Manuscript "11" in red crayon with just 1 d. credit for St. Helena. Obverse also shows "Paid / Devonport / Cape-Packet" transit datestamp (May 28) in black. Illustrated in "St. Helena" by Edward Hibbert on colour plate i. A famous, very rare and attractive #1 cover.
