1840: 1 d. black, plate 2, lettered BE, four margins all round, used on cover, from Strathaven to Edinburgh, dated 12 December 1840, cancelled by a Magenta Maltese Cross. To the reverse a 'STRATHEAVEN' straightline handstamp in red (note spelling), a circular Glasgow transit and an arrival Endinburgh cds (DE 12) both in red. A vertical filing fold centrally and some other folds none of which affect adhesive. Cover is soiled. However, a rare coloured Maltese Cross cancellation. Cert. RPSL (old time - date not visible - signed by John Wilson & submitted by H.R. Harmer). One of three known examples from Strathaven, one other sent to Edinburgh, the other to Glasgow, dated Oct 1840 and February 1841 respectively Gi 2vd = £ 8'500.
