A Map of Ancient Egypt from Celarius, by Thomas Stackhouse, circa 1785, black & white (8.1 x 11.6"). This uncommon map of Ancient Egypt is based on the work of 17th century cartographer Christoph Cellarius, a German classics scholar noted for popularizing the Ancient-Medieval-Modern division of history. It names many notable locations including Memphis, the Pyramids, Babylon, Alexandria, Thebes, and Ptolemais Hermiou. A decorative cartouche at left contains a dedication to "John Lord Bishop of Bath & Wells." Condition: A nice impression on watermarked paper with light scattered foxing.
