 Lot 162 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841809 C-4 R2 Large 0 over Small 0 ANACS graded VF35. Glossy olive brown and steel with slightly lighter toning on the highpoints. Excellent eye appeal, but there are a few minor marks. The notable ones are a shallow planchet flake at the dentils above the back of the head (as struck) and some tiny nicks on the reverse at the E & C in AMERICA. Nicely struck EDS, Manley state 1.0. The small 0 inside the normal 0 in the date is sharp (the die-cutter began with the wrong punch, then recovered). Our grade is VF30+ sharpness net VF25+, close to VF30. Both sides display a layer of oxidation that dulls the natural gloss and adversely affects the eye appeal of an otherwise smooth half cent. No roughness or verdigris, and the only mark is a long, dull nick from the bust tip to star 1. I suspect this piece was cleaned long ago and allowed to retone naturally. Regardless it needs a proper brushing to bring the surfaces back to life. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with die clashmarks behind the head. The date is bold and the legends are clear. Choice frosty medium chocolate brown with steel brown toning on the highpoints and lustrous golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. There is very little actual wear on this half cent but the dies were well worn when this piece was struck. The only marks are a nick on the end of the nose and a smaller one on the cheek to the right. LDS with the reverse rotated 50 degrees CCW from a normal head-to-foot die orientation. Frosty dark steel brown and olive with traces of lighter brown in protected areas and overtones of bluish steel on the highpoints. A spot of lighter brown toning at the top of the 0 in the date and two spots of reddish steel brown toning at HA and CE are the best identifying marks. E-MDS, Manley state 2.0, with minor crumbling in the dentils over star 8. The repunching on star 9 is still visible and the reverse is rotated 35 degrees CW. Our grade is EF45. Frosty steel brown and light chocolate with lustrous lighter steel brown faded down from mint color in protected areas on both sides. Great eye appeal and just a touch of friction on the highest points. The only marks are some tiny ticks scattered over the obverse, none notable, and a small puff of darker toning between STATES and OF. LDS, Manley state 5.0.  Lot 158 - united states classic head half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841809 C-1 R7+ (as a die state) AG3. A couple points sharper but covered with light to moderate roughness on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. No verdigris. The only mark is a dull dent in the center of the obverse that caused a faint bulge in the center of the reverse over EN in CENT. The date is strong and the legends are complete except for UNITED, which is mostly worn away or lost in the roughness. The highpoints are glossy light steel brown and tan while the protected areas are a darker shade of olive brown and chocolate. Extremely rare late die state, Manley state 3.0, with a strong cud break connecting MERI to the rim. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW. One of only 4 or 5 examples known with the cud break and a major die state that was missing in the fabulous Missouri Cabinet Collection, the only complete collection of half cents by die variety ever formed.
