Rev.: 5-lined legend + 'asterisk' device: "JUBILÉ ET FÊTE COMMUNALE DE BRUXELLES AN 1820. *" The event commemorated took place in 1370 and celebrated annually as "the miracle of St. Gudule" until 1870; the 1820 event large and lasted 8 days. The "Mentioning of Departed Souls" is a memorial service occuring during the general morning service on last day of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot (the 3 pilgrimage festivals), and on Yom Kippur; as it mentions charitable offerings, it is customary for the utterer to promise to give a donation - hence this token. Obv.: right-facing Albert; leg. "ALBERTUS III • BOIOR • DUX •". Rev.: 9-line legend in Latin, highlighting Albrecht's (1438-1460) accomplishments, among them the expulsion of the Jews from Upper Bavaria (in 1445). Reverse is double-struck. "Jewish Community of Szeged [Szegedi Zsidó Hitközseg]" & inauguration date in Roman numerals (19 May 1903); outer ring leg. lists 3 names (surname first): Dr. Várhelyi Rósa Izsó [community president?], Immánuel Löw [Szeged Chief Rabbi, designed the Synagogue], Lipót Baumhorn [Leopold Baumhorn, the Jewish architect]. Rev.: new Synagogue w/Heb. date (1903) + left, hallmarks G.S.A. of Viennese die-sinker Georg Adam Scheid & right, .800 silver 'dog's head' mintmark; "Staffner" below (Forrer-unlisted). New building was completed 60 years to the day of erection of Old Synagogue (1843, day after Lag Ba'Omer holiday); construction began in August 1900 & completed October 1902; survived the Holocaust & is today the 2nd largest in Hungary (after Dohány St. in Budapest), 4th largest in the world. Portrait of Christ said to be of Venetian School; medal issued in 16th Century to Jewish converts to Christianity. A similar medal (38mm in bronze) to this one was sold at auction (2009) for $1300.
