Die Mid Wales Railway wollte eine Verbindung zwischen den Kohlegruben in Süd Wales und der Industrie in den Midlands, Lancashire und Yorkshire herstellen. Zudem sollten Waren zu den Häfen von Swansea und Milford Heaven transportiert werden. Diese beiden Häfen waren vor allem für den Überseehandel wichtig. These two ports were very important for the American trade. The company was founded in 1858 but it failed in the financial crises of 1866.
