1911, 15 July ÖSTERREICHISCHE SAHARA-EXPEDITION (Austrian Sahara Expedition), Italian Offices in Tripoli 10c postal stationery card overprinted "Tripoli / di Barberia" cancelled by cds "Tripoli Barberia / 15 Lug 11 / Poste Italiano " alongside a violet boxed expedition marking "Österreichische Sahara-Expedition", written and signed by the expedition leader and explorer Otto C. Artbauer. Sent from TRIPOLIS, LIBYA to the editors of a newspaper in Vienna, Austria mentioning the trip to Morocco. VERY RARE IF NOT UNIQUE EXPEDITION MAIL FROM ITALIAN LIBYA. Very fine.
Otto Cesar Artbauer (1878 - 1916) was an Austrian explorer who travelled to Turkey, Syria, Mesopotamia, Arabia, Sudan, Morocco and the Levant. He carried out these trips on behalf of scientific societies. He was a member of the Geographical Society in Vienna, the Hungarian Society in Budapest, the Natural Sciences Orient Association, the Photographic Society in Vienna and the German Colonial Society in Berlin. The emperor partly financed these expeditions.
