1840: 1 d. black, Plate 2, lettered SL, a fine example with clear to large margins all round and showing large re-entry to the right vertical frame-line, tied to small dated piece '..head Lighthouse, May 1840', by neat Maltese Cross clearly struck in magenta ink. The piece emanates from the Robert Stevenson / Stephenson correspondence, the Chief Engineer for the Northern Lighthouses, he was both designer and builder of various lighthouses and inventor of the intermittent flashing light for lighthouses and Grandfather to the author Robert Louis Stephenson.
