1848: Sarapiqui River illustrated lettersheet, unstamped, sent from Kingston, Jamaica to Norwich, England, dated 9 April 1848, with wonderful printed image of military boats on the river endorsed "Engagement at Serapipui River, San Juan 11 February 1848' with printed details of what the picture depicts; manuscript '2' to front, to the back a dispatch datestamp, a London transit 5 May and an arrival 6 May 1848, soiled to front and two small holes one to picture one to border, otherwise fine, rare example.
Note: The Sarapiqui River is a Costa Rica tributary of the San Juan River, at the time HMS Alarm, HMS Vixen and 1st Company 38th Regiment were involved in military action at this location and date. Ex the Brian Moorhouse Estate.
