lot # 1248 - PH: Arab-Israeli mail suspensions 1949-56

Tuesday Apr 09, 2019 20:00 Asia/Jerusalem

Unusual Israeli "no service" marks on mail from Arab states: 6 OCT 1952 Jordanian postal stationary air letter from AMMAN to RIO DE JANEIRO, franked 40F & tied by strike of local postmark; cover lacks further instructional marks, but as backstamped 14-11-1955(!) HAIFA(!) arrival, must have been returned to sender & misrouted - for over 3 years (unless Israeli postmark misdated & this unrecorded - its Hebrew & English dates match: Monday 29 Heshvan 5716) - as Haifa arrival, probably reached locale by surface/sea mail; here marked by Haifa Post Office "PAS DE SERVICE VIA ISRAEL" instructional marking handstamp K-Type-H.I.3 - this rare as less than 10 covers dating to mid-1950's known such stamped & this is the earliest known date of use per Kibble; curious Arabic manuscript on top-back "get in 27/2 T 952"
