lot # 62 - Afghanistan
1892: "NOT TRANSMISSIBLE/Requires Stamps of P.O. CABUL/for postage beyond Indian Frontier" rectangular framed handstamp in violet on Great Britain 2½d. postal stationery envelope from Luton (March 6, 1892), addressed to Lt. Col. Alta Alleh Khan, British Agency, Kabul, AFGHANISTAN 'via Peshawar' (endorsed), but stopped the following day in London (red cds) and handstamped with the very scarce cachet in violet. In early 1892 the Afghan P.O. ordered incoming mail to bear Afghan stamps for inland postage at the Indian Border (Ludikhana, when carried via Peshawar), in order to cut down on postage due collection difficulties. (Afghanistan did not join the UPU until 1928!) A VERY RARE HANDSTAMP, FROM WHICH ONLY TWO EXAMPLES KNOWN - one (dated 6 days later) in the British Postal Archives, and this earlier one. A SUPERB EXHIBITION ITEM. Catalog Price 4000,00
