1854 (Dec 27): Entire letter from San Francisco to Capt. Isaac Graham (1800-1863) at Santa Cruz struck with "SAN FRANCISCO / CAL / 5" cds (Dec 28) in black. The letter with interesting content "Mr. King attended the U.S. Land Commission tuesday last and eished to submit the case of the Syant (Zayante) Ranch but the law agent would not consent. The law agent has fixed subpoenas for the following witnesses: Thomas C. Byrd, Roman Rodriguez, Francisco Rodriguez, Mrs Mary Love. These witnesses are summoned to be here on the 8th and the 13th January 1855....". Fascinating letter to an original "Mountain Man" and fur trader, who fought at the Battle of Pierre's Hole in 1832. In 1836 Graham led a group of American and European immigrants in a coup against the Mexicoan Governor of California and in 1840 Graham and approximately 100 others were arrested and sent for trial in Tepic leading to both a diplomatic crisis and the eventual annexation of California by the United States after the War of 1848.
