Postmaster's Provisional 1845/46: 5 c. black on greyish wove paper, a horizontal pair with large margins all round, used on 1847 cover from New York to Pittsburgh, PA, for the over 300 mile rate, cancelled by barred red grill handstamp in red, lightly initialled by Alonso Castle Monson in blue ink with "ACM" connected which ties the pair to the cover; curved "PAID" adjacent and "NEW YORK / 6 JAN / 10 cts." datestamp at right in red.
