Monday Nov 26, 2018 13:00 Europe/Zurich

Lithographed by Henri Gillet 1854 (April-August): 5 c. red-brown, wmk. pos. 2, the famous unused example, with good to large margins all round and portion of adjoining stamp at top, of excellent delicate colour, fresh and very fine, without gum. This stamp was described in Caspary as 'orange-brown', in Lilly as 'red-brown' and on the BPA certificate as 'brown'. Despite one's decisions about colour this is a quite beautiful example of this rarity and an iconic stamp of superb provenance. Certs. A. Diena (1968), BPA (1997) Gi. 8.rnProvenance: Collection Alfred H. Caspary, Harmers, June 1958, lot 677; Collection Josiah K. Lilly, Siegel, Sept 1968, lot 98.rn                       rn
