Die Stadt verdankt ihrem Namen dem Damm in der Amstel. Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts erhielt Amsterdam von damaligen Landesherrn die Stadtrechte verliehen. Sie wurde 1369 Mitglied der Hanse. Nachdem im Jahr 1580 Spanien sich Portugal einverleibt hatte, waren die nördlichen Niederlande gezwungen selbst nach Indien zu fahren. Die ersten Fahrten waren ein gigantischer Erfolg. Schon bald wurden überall im Land Pläne für neue Schiffsfahrten nach Indien geschmiedet. Hieraus entstand 1602 die Vereinigte Ostindische Compagnie - deren Aktie aus dem Jahr 1606 noch heute als das älteste Historische Wertpapier gilt. Therefore people planed new ship trips to India everywhere in the country soon afterwards. The East India Company arose out of this in 1602. Its share, dated 1606, it is the oldest share still today. Auf das Papier werden noch heute Zinsen gezahlt! Um die landwirtschaftliche Anbaufläche zu vergrößern, begann man bereits im 17. Jahrhundert in Holland mit der Eindeichung des Watts an der Nordseeküste und vor den westfriesischen Inseln. Auf den dadurch entstandenen Poldern wurde vornehmlich Getreide angebaut. Diese aufwendige Art der Landgewinnung verschlang große Geldsummen, so dass die Städte und Gemeinden zur Finanzierung Anleihen ausgeben mussten. Die Gesellschaft wurde 1880 gegründet. Sie betrieb das vom Architekten Michael Marijnen errichtete Theater Concordia. Am 18. April 1964 wurde das Gebäude von der Stadt Breda übernommen. Nachdem das Theater 1994 geschlossen wurde, blieb die Fassade erhalten und dahinter wurden Häuser errichtet.
