France. Medal, 1910. Narcisse Leven, Alliance Israelite Universelle, Silver-Plated Bronze (1833-1915), the 50th Anniversary of the Alliance Israélite Universelle, Silver-plated bronze medal, 1910, by E Hannaux, bearded bust of Leven left, reverse a muse inscribing 10 Commandments tablet on oak tree, synagogue to left, 59mm. Extremely fine. The Alliance Israélite Universelle was a worldwide philanthropic organisation, founded by Adolphe Crémieux, to whom Leven was secretary. He was an active member of the group which opposed Napoleon III, then from 1880 to 1887 he was a member of the Municipal Council of Paris, of which he became vice-president. He was secretary of the Alliance then vice-president (1883-1898) and, after the death of S Goldschmidt, president. He was also involved with many other Jewish institutions in France. Whilst president of the Jewish Colonization Association, his name to the township of Narcisse, Manitoba, Canada. Rare. About Uncirculated.
