Augustus, with Agrippa. Æ Dupondius (12.33 g), 27 BC-AD 14. Struck ca. AD 10-14. Reverse: COL NEM across field, crocodile right, chained to palm tree; above, wreath with long ties. RPC 525; RIC 159. NGC grade Very Fine; Strike: 4/5, Surface: 5/5.
This coin type was originally minted to publicize Augustus' conferment of the colony named Colonia Augusta Nemausus, in southern Gaul, in 27 BC. This specific coin, however, is from a revival of the 'crocodile dupondius' two years after the death of Agrippa. It includes P P (Pater Patriae) on the obverse, a title Augustus only received in 2 BC, showing that it was a later issue. Estimated Value $500 - 600
