ANCIENT BENGAL: AR vimshatika (4.33g), ca. 5th-3rd century BC, uniface, unusual obverse design that resembles winding rivers, with 1 tiny countermark on obverse and 5 on reverse, appears to be unpublished, VF, R. Since our last auction, we have been told that these were found not far from the Karatoya (Korotoa) River in Bangladesh, in the region of Mahasthangarh, somewhat north of the city of Bogra. Their dating is uncertain, as they may have been produced for some sort of local coinages centuries after the suggested dates here. They are the easternmost of all known punchmarked coins.
