SUDAN: AR riyal, Hafner-205, countermark on 1780 dated Maria Theresa thaler, reading is possibly Ahmad M. A. or perhaps Ahmad M. with damma for vowel [u] above, mount removed, RR. Various experts have viewed this piece and tentatively assigned it to Sudan due to similarities to known pieces published in the Numismatic Circular: July/August 1994 page 260f. This is the first example of this type we have seen and other experts on the subject had yet to encounter the type either. It was likely produced circa 1880s to about 1920, perhaps confirmation by a local shroff.
