lot # 50961 - British P.O. in Siam (Bangkok) covers
1883 (July 24) Envelope from the Count de Kergaradec at the French Consulate in Bangkok to his wife in Angers, France, franked Strait Settlements 1882 wmk CA 8c orange, single tied by a "BANGKOK/JY.24.83" cds, with red Modane à Paris transit alongside, and red "SINGAPORE/A.1.83/PAID" cds and additional maritime, Paris and Anger backstamps all alongside or on reverse, very fine and a very scarce usage of the Straits stamp used in Siam. (Numbered "15" in crayon, being the code for each letter sent between the Count and the Countess)
A wonderful showpiece.
Note: Captain Haffenden commanded the steamer Bangkok (336 tons). She departed Bangkok for Singapore on 24 July 1883. The Messageries Maritimes steamer Iraouaddy (2558 tons) under the command of Captain Delpech left Singapore for Marseille on 5 August 1883.
