British Protectorate Oil Rivers 1892: Registration Envelope, 2 d. ultramarine, size H2, used with 1892 2½ d. purple & blue horizontal pair and 5 d. dull-purple & blue horizontal pair, overprinted "BRITISH PROTECTORATE / OIL RIVERS", sent from Old Calabar to Hamburg, Germany, tied by "OLD CALABAR RIVER" cds, with an additional strike alongside. Also to front a "REGISTERED LIVERPOOL" oval and "REGISTERED LONDON" hooded circle, both dated 26 June 1895. To the reverse a "HANNOVER" circular dated 27 June 1895. Has a vertical filing crease to the left side well clear of adhesives which are attractively cancelled by single strikes of the cds centrally. Rare; one of four recorded used examples. The rate of 1s 3d was the rate for letters up to 3 oz. to UPU countries.
