1853 (Sept 1): 1 d. pale brick-red on blued, a used example with close to large margins all round and showing portion of adjoining stamp at base, used on 1855 Soldier's concessionary rate cover to London from a Sgt. Doyle of the 45th regiment and counter-signed by Officer commanding, tied by 'CGH' obliterator in black. Reverse with two oval dated "GRAHAM'S TOWN" despatch datestamps in red (Jan 23), Cape Town transit cds (Jan 27) in red and London arrival cds (March 14) in red and charged with "2" pence handstamp for carriage by Private ship. Another cover from Sgt. Doyle exists: sold in the Maxwell Joseph auction at Sotheby's, the letter in that 1854 cover states that the 45th were stationed at Fort Beaufort. Slightest of soiling but an extremely rare and most unusual cover. Cert. BPA (2024).
