New York to Beaune, France 1862 transatlantic stampless folded letter. Trent Affair letter.
Trent Affair reference: "Our political scene remains the same one for the Civil War, one promises to us soon at Washington the end of this deplorable state. Fortunately between the English and our country finishes amicably by rendering of Missre Mason and Slidel." The reference is to two Confederate diplomats taken by the Union from a British ship. They were later released. New York 3 debit exchange on folded letter. Red French entry. Steamer Niagara. January 7, 1862.
