Auction 333-341 Europe & Overseas Americas (North, Central & South America) - Day 1

1856/60: Santiago printing 10 c. deep blue, three diagonal bisects used to pay a 15 centavos rate (two of the stamps are sheet marginal at right), used on cover to Valparaiso, all tied by target handstamps in black. Addressee's name excised but a rare multiple usage of the bisects. Cert. BPA (1980).

1856/62: Santiago printing, covers (2), one with 10 c. greyish-blue worn impression, large margins all round, used on 1860 cover from Valparaiso to Arequipa, Peru tied by target obliterator in black with "Valparaiso" cds in red adjacent (Jan 15); and second cover with a clear impression 10 c. blue, diagonally bisected on cover to Santiago and neatly tied.

1862 (Jan 1): Third London printing 1 c. lemon-yellow, wmk. 1,  an unused block of twelve (6 x 2), corner marginal from top right corner of the sheet, showing part "(CO)RREOS" of marginal watermark, large margins all round, minor vertical bends affect third and ninth stamps, large part or unmounted og. A rare and most attractive multiple Scott = $ 800++. Ex the Brian Moorhouse estate.

1862: 1 c. chrome yellow, a used example in combination with 1867 2 c. black, two examples, used on 1867 entire letter to Valparaiso tied by barred "CANCELLED" obliterators in black, with "Santiago" cds. of despatch below (July 9) in red. Minor corner fault on the 1 centavo adhesive but a very rare and attractive mixed issue usage. Ex the Brian Moorhouse estate.

1861/62: Perkins Bacon 10 c. bright blue, wmk. 1, an unused block of twelve (4 x 3), with clear to good margins on three sides and shaved at left, of lovely rich colour, minor ironed gum bends not affecting the frontal appearance, large part og. with central stamps unmounted og. A scarce and attractive multiple Gi 31 = £ 450+/Scott =  $ 480+.

1861/62: Perkins Bacon 10 c. bright blue, wmk. 1, a used block of nine (3 x 3) with clear to good margins on thee sides and just shaved at base, of fine fresh colour, each stamp lightly cancelled by circular target obliterator in black. Slightest ironed bend but a most attractive and scarce large multiple Gi 31.

1861/62: Perkins Bacon printing 10 c. blue, a fine example in a bright shade with large margins all round and showing portions of adjoining stamps on three sides, used on 1862 cover to the Bishop of Concepcion , tied by "Cancelled" obliterator in black with "Santiago / Chile" despatch cds alongside (Aug 30) in red Gi 31.

1862 (Jan 1): Third London printing 20 c. green, wmk. 1, a magnificent irregular unused block of  21, marginal from left of sheet, with primarily good margins all round but some stamps just haved on the edges of the multiple, of lovely vibrant colour, ironed horizontal creasing does not detract, large part or unmounted og. A splendid and extremely rare multiple. Ex the Brian Moorhouse estate.

1861/62: 20 c. green, reprint made by Perkins Bacon for the Royal Philatelic Society in March 1929. A block of twenty-four without watermark, marginal from left of sheet showing part of "BOND" watermark in the sheet margin only; fresh and very fine.

1867: Perkins Bacon Plate Proofs for the 5 c. red, taken from the original plates, printed by the Chilean Mint on Chilean Coat of Arms paper, a single example with part italic sheet marginal imprint (and also showing plate scratch in margin); a block of four in a pale 'dusty' red shade on ribbed paper and a scarce block of eight (4 x 2) pulled from the Perkins Bacon second plate with 'quadrille' impression (positions 183-187 / 195-199); this...

1866: Final santiago printing 5 c. rose-red, an unused corner marginal irregular block of eleven from top left of the sheet, showing imprint "Es preciso colocar las estampas arriba de la direccion y", one or two stamps just shaved at base but of fine fresh colour, three stamps slightly thginned not affecting appearance, large part or unmounted og. 1867: 5 c. red, single examples used on individual covers (2), with §869 cover to Santiago with 5 c. red tied by segmented cork handstamp with "ANGOL / EST / CHILE" handstamp adjacent, second cover with 5 c. red tied by "CANCELLED" obliterator with scarce "S. JAVIER DE LONUCASULA / CHILE" circular handstamp adjacent in black. A scarce pair
