Obverse depicts open Torah scroll and reader pointing to the text, with name "Moses Ben Maimon" next to it. On reverse portrait image of Rambam. On rim artist's name and date are etched. This piece appears to be based in part (Rambam's portrait) on an earlier thinner medal produced by Shagin in 1985 for the Sephardic Educational Center in Jerusalem. Obverse: 7 lines of Hebrew prayer during the circumcision: "Our Lord and Lord of our forefathers sustain this child [name] for his father and mother" and "Happy will be the father by the progeny of his loins and rejoiced will be the mother by the fruit of her belly. As is written"; Kohn's name in exergue. Reverse: 4-lines in Hebrew surrounded by legend all excerpted from the ceremony prayers, center: "Happy will be your father and your mother and rejoyceful your birth", edge: "Just as you entered into a convenant so shall you partake of the Torah and the Khupa and of good deeds"; Hebrew date "5698" [1837-38] in exergue. Kohn was a prominent German Jewish medalist, uniquely working exclusively on Jewish themes, using Hebrew. Rev.: conductor's stick, flying carpets & sheet music over grand set of stairs & arches; "Imre Kalman" in Russian & "Kalman Emmerich" in English. Kalman (1882- 1953) was a Jewish-Hungarian composer of operettas, together w/ Franz Lehár (Catholic) helped bring Viennese operetta to its "silver age" in early 1920's. Rev: a globe device split into segments to highlight the business calendar dates of Jewish holidays, with vertical legend in center "1959 Holidays 1960". The token may have been commissioned by a Jerusalem-based Yeshiva - but the use of Gregorian dates (and not Hebrew dates) seems unusual for a Yeshiva. Frenkil (1909- 1999) was a Baltimore-based Jewish contractor and philanthropist who developed good political connection, incl. presidents, governors & elected officials. Moreell (1892- 1978) commissioned the medal: Jewish, highly regarded officer and engineer, chief of USN's Bureau of Yards & Docks, father of the Navy's 'Seabees' (Construction Forces).
