Seleukid Kingdom. Posthumous issue in the name of Antiochos IV Epiphanes. Silver Drachm (4.2 g), 146/5 BC. Antioch on the Orontes, during the interregnum immediately following Alexander I's withdrawal from the city. Diademed head of Antiochos IV right. Reverse BAΣIΛEΩΣ [A]NTI-OΧOY [E]ΠIΦ-ANOYΣ, Apollo seated left on omphalos, testing arrow and resting hand on grounded bow; in exergue, monogram. SC 1886g; Mørkhom, NC 1960, 13; HGC 9, 745. Lustrous and rare in this high grade. Nearly Mint State.

Alexander I Balas was a pretender to the Seleukid throne who with Ptolemaic support replaced the hated Demetrios I. He was an uninspired ruler, however, leaving the tasks of government to his ministers while he lived frivolously. As a result, the kingdom suffered extensive territorial losses to both the Parthians and Elymaians.

In 146 BC, the son of Demetrios I, Demetrios II, advanced into Cilicia at the head of a large army of Cretan mercenaries with the intent of overthrowing the pretender. Ptolemy VI marched north through Koile-Syria in support of Alexander, but in Ptolemaïs the latter attempted to have him assassinated, so he then switched his support to Demetrios II. Ptolemaic agents in Antioch instigated the citizenry to rise up against Alexander, and he fled the city. Within a short time Ptolemy arrived in the capital city, where he was offered but refused the diadem, convincing the reluctant Antiochenes to accept Demetrios II as king. This rare coin was struck during this tumultuous period following Alexander's withdrawal from the city but before the arrival of Ptolemy.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Sicily, Syracuse. Dionysios I. Silver Decadrachm (43.2 g), 405-367 BC. Unsigned dies by Euainetos. Struck ca. 405-400 BC. Charioteer driving galloping quadriga left, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying right, crowning charioteer with wreath; in exergue, a military harness, shield, greaves, cuirass, and Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal spear; below, AΘΛA. Reverse ΣY-PA-KO-[ΣIΩN], wreathed head of Arethusa left, wearing triple-pendant earring and necklace; behind, scallop shell; around, four dolphins. Gallatin dies R.J.II/O.XXI; SNG ANS 375 (same dies). Excellent metal, slight double striking and lightly toned. Extremely Fine.

Amongst the most famous of all ancient Greek coins, the decadrachms of Syracuse were struck to finance the military ambitions of the tyrant, Dionysios I, who made Syracuse the most powerful of the western Greek city-states. Two master artists, Kimon and Euainetos, worked at the mint, and both sometimes signed their dies. Their styles are sufficiently distinct, however, that even on unsigned dies the hand of the engraver is readily apparent, as is the case with this coin by the artist Euainetos. Euainetos's coins were especially regarded in ancient times even as they are today, and served as inspiration for the coinage of a number of other cities throughout the Greek world.
Estimated Value $30,000 - 40,000.

Ionia, Miletos, c. 259-246 BC. AR Stater (10.59g). Laureate head of Apollo left. Reverse Lion walking left, head right, looking back at eight-pointed star; monograms to left and magistrate's name "Samios" in exergue. Deppert-Lipitz 504 (this reverse die); Bement Collection (Naville, June 1924) lot 11465 (this obverse die). Extremely Rare, one of only four known. Superb Extremely Fine.

This is an extremely rare issue, known as the "Persic" stater. One of only 14 surviving examples struck on this unusual weight standard, and one of only four in the name of this magistrate Samios. The normal struck coins of the 3rd century BC from Miletos were didrachms of about 6.5 grams. This coins was struck on a standard equivalent to two of the old Persian sigloi and therefore dubbed the "Persic" stater.
