Lot 345 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841798 S-165 R4 Large 8, Style II Hair F15. Five points sharper but there is a patch of microscopic roughness hidden in the hair near the ear. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and this cent offers excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a couple light contact marks under LI and into the hair, a rim nick under the 79, and a light rim bruise under the right side of the denominator. Rather glossy steel and olive brown blended with reddish chocolate toning in the hair were the microscopic roughness resides. Nicely struck MDS Breen state II, with die clashmarks at the throat but an uncracked reverse. The second T in STATES was first punched inverted, then corrected, and the top of the inverted T is clear. A nice example of a variety that's difficult to find in grades better than VG. Lot 308 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841796 S-98 R4 Draped Bust G5. The obverse is a bit weaker but the reverse is considerably stronger with complete, clear legends. The devices are smooth but microscopic granularity covers the fields and protected areas. No verdigris and only a few insignificant marks. A dull nick on the leaf over the O in ONE is the best identifying mark. The lower third of the date is worn into the rim but everything else is clear. Slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel with lighter steel brown and chocolate toning on the devices. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks on the obverse. Lot 324 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841797 S-127 R4 F12. Sharpness VF25 or a bit better but covered with uniform very fine roughness under a slightly glossy dark greenish olive brown and steel patina. No verdigris. The only significant marks are a dull scratch in the hair under ER in LIBERTY and another from the N in ONE to the E in CENT. Both scratches are old and blend perfectly into the natural patina. MDS, Breen state IV, with a clear die crack from the dentils through the left top of the second T in STATES to the left foot of the adjacent A, and a vertical die crack up into the field from the bust tip. Double struck. The first strike was centered on the planchet but it was struck a second time slightly off center to K-11 and rotated about 10-15 degrees. The result is a dramatic, easily visible mint error showing the lower half of the first date and the complete second date, plus other doubling on both sides. Removed from an NGC slab graded VF Details, Reverse Scratched (NGC label #2038608-047 included, and it shows the attribution, Double Struck Mint Error status, and the Mervis provenance). Lot 303 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap VG10+. A point or two sharper but there are a few too many minor marks for the higher grade. No corrosion or verdigris. Most of the marks are tiny pre-striking planchet chips that didn't completely disappear when the planchet was struck. This was a result of the very late state of the obverse die where die swelling and cracks weakened the strike left of the lowest curls, and that resulted in weakness on the opposing legend at D-STA. Otherwise the only notable marks are an arcing scratch through the N in UNITED and a shallow planchet flake at the top of that E (as struck). Attractive glossy chocolate brown and steel. LDS, Breen state VII, with horizontal die cracks in the field before the portrait and obvious swelling on both sides of the portrait. The date is bold and the legends are strong except for weakness at D-STA as previously mentioned. A decent example of a neat die state. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 319 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841796 S-114 R5- Draped Bust VG8. Sharpness F15 but covered with uniform fine roughness mostly hidden under glossy chocolate brown toning with lighter steel brown toning covering the devices. There are faint traces of shallow reddish verdigris on the reverse but overall the eye appeal of this piece is decent. The notable marks are faint hairline scratches covering the portrait plus a few stray hairline scratches on the reverse. None of the scratches is visible to the unaided eye. EDS, Breen state I, before any cracks. The date is bold and the legends are complete, although a few letters on the reverse are relatively weak thanks to an uneven strike. The sharpness is VG10 or a bit better but there are traces of shallow black verdigris or hard crud on both sides, mostly on the reverse. Lot 346 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF35. Glossy light olive and steel brown with overtones of sea green and light bluish steel. There is very little wear on this cent but the strike is uneven, as often seen on this variety, thanks to dies that were out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not parallel). This improper die alignment probably caused the strong die crack on the reverse which is located at the place where the dies came the closest when striking a cent. The crack must have occurred very early in the marriage and an uncracked example is unknown. No roughness or verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks. The notable ones are a short diagonal scratch in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon and a couple very small nicks on the neck. MDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die crack arcing from the dentils through the E in UNITED, the wreath, and the fraction ending at the rim under the right side of the denominator. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees CCW. The bust, lower half of the 798, and the opposing OF-A on the reverse are all weakly struck. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc.
