AN ISLAMIC COIN STRUCK IN JERUSALEM. al-Ma'mun, AH 194-218 (810-833). Fals de cuivre AH 219 (834), al-Quds (Jérusalem). Inscription sur trois lignes dans un cercle hachuré / Inscriptions sur quatre lignes entourée d'une légende circulaire. 3,66g. A 291. Rare en cet état. Superbe pour ce type.
Under the Umayyads Jerusalem was known by its Roman name Iliya Filastin, but from the time of al-Ma’mun it was given the Islamic religious name al-Quds (meaning «holiness» or «sanctity»). This almost certainly refers to the shrine of the Dome of the Rock. This is the only coin on which al-Quds appears as a mint name.
