An extremely rare denomination. This is not a dinar, but rather a half-dinar that was intended for presentation. This unusual denomination suggests that individuals of different standings would have received different presentation coins during distributions at the caliph's court.

AN ISLAMIC COIN STRUCK IN JERUSALEM. al-Ma'mun, AH 194-218 (810-833). Fals de cuivre AH 219 (834), al-Quds (Jérusalem). Inscription sur trois lignes dans un cercle hachuré / Inscriptions sur quatre lignes entourée d'une légende circulaire. 3,66g. A 291. Rare en cet état. Superbe pour ce type.
Under the Umayyads Jerusalem was known by its Roman name Iliya Filastin, but from the time of al-Ma’mun it was given the Islamic religious name al-Quds (meaning «holiness» or «sanctity»). This almost certainly refers to the shrine of the Dome of the Rock. This is the only coin on which al-Quds appears as a mint name.

al-Musta'sim, AH 640-656 (1242-1258). Dinar lourd AH 645 (1247-48), Madinat al-Salam (Bagdad). Inscription sur six lignes, flanquée de deux inscriptions verticales de deux lignes chacune, le tout dans une rosace / Inscription sur cinq lignes, flanquée de deux inscriptions verticales d'une ligne chacune, le tout dans une rosace. 14,38g. A 275. Très beau.
This is an example of the coinage of the last Abbasid caliph struck at Madinat al-Salam (Baghdad) before the city fell to the Mongols in AH 656 (1258). It is interesting to note that the legends on this coin are the same as those introduced by al-Ma'mun in the year AH 198, certainly a record for longevity in the history of coinage. Although the coinage of al-Musta’sim is not particularly rare, it is seldom found at such a heavy weight, so evenly struck and fully legible as this piece. By the time this coin was struck, gold was regarded as a commodity to be weighed rather than counted as the traditional dinar had been. The issuance of gold by the caliphal mint in the form of ingots provided a guarantee of the purity of the metal itself, thus fulfilling one of the ruler's Qur’anic responsibilities to "give full measure and full weight with justice".

AN UNPUBLISHED GOLD DINAR FOR THE OPENING OF THE MINT. al-Muktafi, AH 289-295 (902-908). Dinar AH 289 (902), Suq al-Ahwaz. Inscription centrale sur trois lignes, entourée d'une double légende circulaire / Inscription centrale sur cinq lignes entourée d'une légende circulaire. 3,97g. A 243.1 (sans précision d'atelier) ; Bernardi - (cf.226). Très bel exemplaire.
There is no mention of this mint during the reign of al-Muktafi in Bernardi. According to Zambaur, the mint of Suq al-Awaz started producing gold coins in AH 307 (AH 302 according to Diler) and silver coins in AH 291. As Abbassid mints often struck both gold and silver coins depending on local demand, the date AH 291 was thought to mark the definitive start of this mint's activities. However, this dinar dating from AH 289 predates this. It may have been a special issue for the accession of the caliph al-Muktafi.

Al-Saffah was the first caliph of the Abbasid dynasty. He achieved victory over the Umayyads following a three-year conflict, resulting in a shifting of power from Syria to Iraq. A new capital, Madinat al-Salam (Baghdad), was founded in 762 CE. The early Abbassid dinars did not bear the name of the mint where they were struck and could have come from a number of different mints depending on requirements.

From the reign of the caliph al-Mutawakkil (AH 232-247), it was customary to strike dinars on large blanks and give them to important visitors as gifts. Such coins often became highly prized items, including this one, which was worn on a necklace at the time. The date AH 300 was hitherto unknown and this coin is probably unique.
