Auction 333-341 Western Australia & Great Britain - Day 3

1860: Plate Proofs from Perkins Bacon plates, the 2 d., 4 d. and 6 d. values, Imperforate in blocks of four (the 6 d. sheet marginal at right), all engraved in black on thin white unwatermarked, ungummed paper. 2 d. close at lower right and ironed horizontal bend, otherwise all very fine with large margins all round. A delightful and very scarce set.

1860 (Aug 11): 2 d. pale orange, wmk. Swan sideways, Imperforate, an unused block of four, corner marginal from lower left of sheet, with good margins all round, ironed wrinkles, unused without gum. An attractive multiple Gi = £ 520+.

Proofs produced in Western Australia 1860 (May): 4 d. rose-claret, Imperforate Proof block of four on thin ungummed unwatermarked paper, corner marginal from top right hand corner of the sheet. Most attractive and scarce.

1864 (June 21): 2 d. blue, wmk. Swan upright, Imperforate, an unused vertical pair, sheet marginal at base, of fine definition and with large margins all round, fresh and very fine. Top stamp, position 103, showing a Major Re-entry with spot above the wings and line on "T" of WESTERN at left, unused without gum, fresh and very fine Gi = £ 700+.

1864 (June 21): 2 d. deep blue, wmk. Swan upright, Imperforate, an unused horizontal pair, corner marginal from top right of sheet (positions 9-10) with large margins all round, of lovely rich colour, slightest tear in selvedge only, unused without gum. A delightful and famous multiple Gi = 700+.

1860 (Aug 11): 2 d. pale orange, wmk. Swan sideways, unofficially rouletted 7½ to 14, a fine used example cancelled by Bowra circle and bars "1" numeral obliterator of Perth in black. A scarce stamp Gi = £ 300.

1861 (July 27): 6 d. sage-green, wmk. Swan sideways, rouletted 7½ to 14 - variety doubled at base, well centred for this issue, lightly cancelled by Bowra circle and bars numeral "3" obliterator of Perth in black. Unusual variety - the second rouletting along the Duty Plate at base. Rare Gi = £ 750+.

Recess by Perkins Bacon 1861: 1 d. rose, wmk. Swan sideways, intermediate perf. 7½ to 14, an unused example of fine delicate colour, without gum, 1 d. rose used examples - one cancelled in black and the other in blue; and a fine 2 d. blue cancelled by Bowra "8" numeral of Fremantle in black Gi = £ 1'000+.

Recess by Perkins Bacon 1861: 4 d. vermilion, wmk. Swan sideways, perf. 7½ to 14, an unused example of fine fresh colour, perfs. perhaps slightly nibbed at top, unused without gum, but in this describer's opinion a very fine example of this elusive and rare stamp Gi = £ 1'900.

Note: Ormond Hill of Somerset House was not satisfied with the resuls of applying his machine to the Western Australia stamps, which were neither evenly spaced nor well aligned on the sheets "apparently because...

Swan sideways, perf. 14 at Somerset House, an unused horizontal pair of bright vivid colour, ably showing the problems Ormond Hill had with the perforating of the issue, superb large part og. An extremely scarce multiple Gi = £ 1'000+.

A rare and fine multiple Gi = £ 600+.
