Auction 333-341 Nigeria, Cameroon, Sudan & Worldwide Postal History - Day 4

1865 (January 20): Cover to Amsterdam, franked with 1858 24 ö. orange vertical strip of three, tied by Stockholm cds, correctly paying the 72 öre rate to the Netherlands via Prussia for mail up to 15 grams, handstamped "Franco" and "Fr. Grenze" in black, reverse with "Hamburg K.S.P.A. (D) and oval Hamburg datestamps (23 Jan), next-day red Amsterdam receiver, adhesives with some gum-soaked perfs, else fine. Signed Sjöman.

1869 (March 31): Entire letter to Amsterdam franked with 1858 2 d. blue, plate 12, and 1867 3 d. rose, plate 5, tied by London '105' duplex, fine strike of boxed "L2" late fee marking paid by the 2 d. adhesive, clear Amsterdam arrival backstamp (1 Apr), fresh and attractive.

1849 (July 10): Cover to the Hague, franked with 1847-54 1 s. pale green embossed, just touched at left and foot, cancelled with "13" numeral cancel of London, small blue script "England / Franco" handstamp, reverse with Lombard Street Maltese Cross and red Gravenhage cds receiver (12 July), a pleasing single-franking, paying the ½ oz. rate.

1893 (Oct): 1887 ½ d. vermilion, tied to ornately illustrated printed circular by oval bar cancel, backstamped with Gravenhage arrival cds (Oct 11), circular opens to show lavish advertisement for Chancery Lane Safe Deposit, today the London Silver Vaults, with insert "Admit the Bearer and Friends to View the Safes and Strong Rooms", a beautiful example of this rate to a foreign destination.

1860 (Dec 22): Cover from Castlemaine to Haarlem, franked with 1858 rouletted 6 d. light blue, tied by black numeral cancel, reverse with Castlemaine despatch, Melbourne transit (24 Dec) and Haarlem receiver in red (20 Feb, 1861), some overall soiling, yet a scarce single franking to an uncommon foreign destination.

India used in Burma, 1869 (April 27): Cover to Rotterdam, redirected to Amsterdam, franked with 1865 8 p. mauve and 1 a. brown, postmarked Rangoon and tied by indistinct commercial oval handstamp, endorsed "via Trieste", manuscript "1" in blue for the share of postage to India, and "10" in black denoting 10c due from recipient, reverse with Calcutta / India / Paid (3 May), Rotterdam (30 May), blue 1-½ c. / Amsterdam foreign printed matter tax...

1867 (November 5): Cover from Halifax to Rotterdam franked with 8½ c. deep green vertical pair tied by Halifax duplex, endorsed "RRMS China" and struck with red London PAID transit on front (16 Nov), reverse with receiver (18 Nov), red "5" manuscript accountancy notation, the odd trivial tone spot mentioned for strict accuracy, a lovely and fresh cover and rare franking.

1873 (April 21): Finlay, Scott and Co's East India Prices Current, printed circular, franked with 8 p. purple and 2 a. orange, tied by neatly struck Bombay duplex to Amsterdam, with May 1 arrival backstamp, fresh and fine.

1859 (August 7): Entire letter from Port Louis to Amsterdam franked with 1859 Lapirot 2 d. blue horizontal pair (positions 11-12), intermediate impression, large margins on two sides, close but clear at right and foot, tied by oval mute cancel, endorsed "via Suez & Marseille", with red Suez TPO on front, reverse with indistinct Mauritius double split-ring, Marseille a Paris TPO, Paris (13 Sept) cds in black and Amsterdam receiver (14 Sept...

1875 (January 8): Entire letter to Amsterdam franked with three 1863-72 6 d. blue green and single 1 s. orange, endorsed "via Marseille" and struck "PD" in red, red Suez TPO on front (4 Feb), reverse with oval Forwarding Agent's mark of Richardson & Co, Mauritius cds (8 Jan) and Amsterdam receiver (6 Feb), filing folds clear of adhesive, fine.

1858 (November 17): Cover from Swellendam franked with 1853 1 d. brown-red on blued paper, 1855 1 s. yellow green, each with three mostly large margins, the 1 s. particularly so, cancelled by red triangular obliterator, endorsed "Prepaid throughout" and "via England / per first Steamer", reverse with Swellendam despatch, Cape Town (Nov 18) and Cape Packet Devonport transits (29 Dec), some light overall aging, a desirable an uncommon cover...
