Lot 2180 - united states commemorative gold coins - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841917 McKinley Dollar. PCGS graded MS-67 PQ. The second year of this popular commemorative design, the 1917 McKinley Memorial gold dollar is less available than its 1916 counterpart. The two issues were created to provide funding for the McKinley Birthplace Memorial in Niles, Ohio. The present example is a spectacular Superb Gem, with intricate detail evident on all design elements and lustrous, unmarked surfaces. Reddish-gold and green-gold colors combine when the coin is viewed under a light. Pop 65; 3 finer in 67+ (PCGS # 7455) . Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 2175 - united states commemorative gold coins - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841905 Lewis and Clark Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with rich honey-golden patina on both sides. Only 10,041 pieces were minted of which this is certainly among the most attractive. Due to the promotional mischief by Farran Zerbe relating to the 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition gold dollars and the consequent market bust, collectors took a dim view of the subsequent Lewis and Clark gold dollars, as here, issued in Portland Oregon, with dates of 1904 and 1905. Those that were sold mainly went to the public and were not well cared for. Today the 1904 and 1905 Lewis and Clark dollars are several times scarcer in Mint State grades than are the other pairs of commemorative gold dollars -- the 1903 Louisiana Purchase, the 1916 and 1917 McKinley, and the 1922 Grant varieties. Pop 243; 79 finer (PCGS # 7448) . Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84united states commemorative gold coins |

Luxuriant orange-gold color is seen over each side with light accents of frost everywhere. Keen-edged devices are displayed throughout, including Jefferson's wig. Jefferson, by the way, was a red head with thinning hair according to paintings done at the time of his Presidency.
