GREECE: GREECE: Brass commemorative medal for the Olympics 1896 In Athens. The Panathenaic Stadium surrounded by the legend "ΠΑΝΑΘΗΝΑΙΚΟΝ ΣΤΑΔΙΟΝ / ΗΡΩΔΗΣ - ΑΒΕΡΩΦ / ΕΝ ΑΘΗΝΑΙΣ" on obverse. Olive wreath surrounded by the legend "ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΟΙ ΑΓΩΝΕΣ / 776πΧ 1896" on reverse. Herod and Averof were the financiers of the construction of the Stadium. Head of King George I on obverse. Inscription "ΑΓΩΝΟΘΕΤΗΣ ΕΥΑΓΓΕΛΗΣ ΖΑΠΠΑΣ / ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑ ΑΘΗΝΗΣΙ ΑΩΟ. / ΤΑΞΕΩΣ Β" within wreath on reverse. Engraved by Barre. Diameter: 37mm.
