lot # 102 - united states liberty cap half cents
1797 C-2 R3 Plain Edge AG3. Double Struck over a Talbot Allum & Lee Cent. A couple points sharper where the designs were properly struck up, but fine porosity covers the left side of the reverse. The remainder of the planchet is reasonably smooth, and there are no marks or verdigris. The obverse is considerably stronger than the reverse. Glossy dark bluish steel and olive brown. Double struck with an offset of 1-2 millimeters between the impressions. Doubling is obvious on the obverse but not visible on the reverse, which suggests the reverse may have been a brockage maker during the second strike (the reverse struck into a new blank planchet). Traces of TAL Cent undertype are clearly visible on the right edge of the obverse. Weight 73.7 grains.
Estimated Value $200-UP.
