Lot 102 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84

1797 C-2 R3 Plain Edge AG3. Double Struck over a Talbot Allum & Lee Cent. A couple points sharper where the designs were properly struck up, but fine porosity covers the left side of the reverse. The remainder of the planchet is reasonably smooth, and there are no marks or verdigris. The obverse is considerably stronger than the reverse. Glossy dark bluish steel and olive brown. Double struck with an offset of 1-2 millimeters between the impressions. Doubling is obvious on the obverse but not visible on the reverse, which suggests the reverse may have been a brockage maker during the second strike (the reverse struck into a new blank planchet). Traces of TAL Cent undertype are clearly visible on the right edge of the obverse. Weight 73.7 grains.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

1797 C-3b R4 Low Head with Lettered Edge F12+. Struck over a cut-down spoiled large cent. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and this piece offers excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a couple nicks and shallow scuff marks under the L in LIBERTY. EDS, Manley state 1.0. The devices are nicely impressed everywhere except at the upper right of the reverse, as usual for this variety. Struck on a planchet cut from an off-center large cent. AMER from the large cent remains clearly visible on the neck into the last digit in the date. A beautiful example of the popular Lettered Edge version of the variety and a great mint error (or making the best of a Large Cent mint error if you prefer). Weight 82.9 grains.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.

1797 C-2 R3 Plain Edge AG3. A couple points sharper but covered with fine to moderate granularity under rather glossy dark chocolate brown toning. No verdigris. The only marks are a dull, shallow dent in the field above the end of the pole and another at the B in LIBERTY. The date and legends are not strong but they are easily readable except for RICA and the fraction due to swelling in that area.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1795 C-1 R2 Lettered Edge AG3+. Close to G4 but the planchet is covered with microscopic roughness. No verdigris or notable marks. Somewhat glossy olive brown and steel with slightly lighter toning on the devices. The date is weak but readable and the legends are complete except for weakness on HALF CENT. EDS, Manley state 1.0, before any die swelling at AME. The planchet appears very slightly egg-shaped thanks to an incipient planchet clip before the lower half of the neck, as struck.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

1794 C-3a R5 G6. Small Edge Letters. Slightly sharper with too many small contact marks for the sharpness grade. The only significant contact marks are a dull nick on the wreath ribbon left of the denominator and another near the rim over ER in AMERICA. There is no corrosion or verdigris. Mostly glossy chocolate brown. The date is strong and the legends are complete and easily readable, although RICA is weak due to an uneven strike on the reverse. A decent lower-grade example of this tough die variety.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1796 C-2 R4 With Pole PCGS Genuine AU Details Scratch. Very attractive frosty medium chocolate and light olive brown with traces of lighter brown and tan toning in protected areas. No spots, stains, or planchet defects. Looks choice to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals a half dozen hairline scratches meandering through the obverse fields, all blending perfectly into the very attractive toning. The reverse is flawless. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective suggesting this piece was struck early in the die marriage. Our grade is EF40 sharpness net VF30. A very impressive example of the date in spite of the imperfections. And it comes with a long, very impressive provenance. Weight 84.2 grains.
Estimated Value $40,000-UP.

1795 C-2a/b R7+ Punctuated Date on a Thin Planchet with Lettered Edge AG3. A few points sharper but covered with light to moderate corrosion on all but the highpoints, which are smooth. No marks or verdigris. The date and legends are weak but readable although some letters and devices are distorted by the corrosion. Slightly glossy dark chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints of the reverse. The edge lettering is partially visible but obvious and some of the letters hang off the planchet because they are taller than the planchet is thick. Weight 89.2 grains versus the thick-planchet standard of 104.0 grains. Manley lists 3 examples of the 95C2a known on a thin planchet with edge lettering. We know the transition from thick 104.0-grain lettered edge planchets occurred during production of this variety. Obviously a few of the thin planchets got misdirected to the Castaing machine and had edge letters added to them, and we know of at least one thick planchet 95C2 that escaped the mint without having the edge lettering applied (see page 49 in the Manley reference). Weight 89.2 grains. Comes with a nice provenance.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1794 C-4a R3 NGC graded G4. Small Edge Letters. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker olive brown toning in the protected areas. Microscopic roughness covers the protected areas while the devices are smooth. No marks or verdigris. LDS, Manley state 4.0, with strong swelling in the field under the cap nearly to the date. The date is clear and the legends are complete although some elements are weak. Our grade is consistent with the slab grade, and the obverse is close to G5.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1796 C-2 R4 With Pole ANACS graded AG Details Net Fair-2, Corroded. The planchet is covered with uniform moderate corrosion that obscures some of the devices and legends, but the date and LIBERTY remain easily readable. In fact the all-important date is the clearest detail on this piece. No marks or verdigris. Dark chocolate brown and steel. Our grade is net Basal State-1+ (Fair-2 on the obverse, Basal State-1 on the reverse). The attribution is noted on the ANACS label.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.

1795 C-3 R5+ Punctuated Date NGC graded VF30. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with smooth surfaces. The only notable marks are a few tiny contact marks on the chin and a short, dull scratch in the field off the chin. In addition there is a shallow planchet cutter impression rather well hidden in the dentils at the bottom of the obverse, as struck. Otherwise this piece is nearly perfect. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with the usual weakness on HALF CENT. This piece is a new discovery. It has never been brushed or "improved" in any way so there are traces of loose dirt in protected areas. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net VF20. A condition census example of this very tough die variety.
Estimated Value $6,000-UP.
