Lot 103 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841797 C-3b R4 Low Head with Lettered Edge F12+. Struck over a cut-down spoiled large cent. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are smooth and this piece offers excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a couple nicks and shallow scuff marks under the L in LIBERTY. EDS, Manley state 1.0. The devices are nicely impressed everywhere except at the upper right of the reverse, as usual for this variety. Struck on a planchet cut from an off-center large cent. AMER from the large cent remains clearly visible on the neck into the last digit in the date. A beautiful example of the popular Lettered Edge version of the variety and a great mint error (or making the best of a Large Cent mint error if you prefer). Weight 82.9 grains. Lot 101 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841797 C-2 R3 Plain Edge AG3. A couple points sharper but covered with fine to moderate granularity under rather glossy dark chocolate brown toning. No verdigris. The only marks are a dull, shallow dent in the field above the end of the pole and another at the B in LIBERTY. The date and legends are not strong but they are easily readable except for RICA and the fraction due to swelling in that area. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 102 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841797 C-2 R3 Plain Edge AG3. Double Struck over a Talbot Allum & Lee Cent. A couple points sharper where the designs were properly struck up, but fine porosity covers the left side of the reverse. The remainder of the planchet is reasonably smooth, and there are no marks or verdigris. The obverse is considerably stronger than the reverse. Glossy dark bluish steel and olive brown. Double struck with an offset of 1-2 millimeters between the impressions. Doubling is obvious on the obverse but not visible on the reverse, which suggests the reverse may have been a brockage maker during the second strike (the reverse struck into a new blank planchet). Traces of TAL Cent undertype are clearly visible on the right edge of the obverse. Weight 73.7 grains. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. In fact the all-important date is the clearest detail on this piece. No marks or verdigris. Dark chocolate brown and steel. Our grade is net Basal State-1+ (Fair-2 on the obverse, Basal State-1 on the reverse). The attribution is noted on the ANACS label. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 93 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841795 C-3 R5+ Punctuated Date NGC graded VF30. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate with smooth surfaces. The only notable marks are a few tiny contact marks on the chin and a short, dull scratch in the field off the chin. In addition there is a shallow planchet cutter impression rather well hidden in the dentils at the bottom of the obverse, as struck. Otherwise this piece is nearly perfect. MDS, Manley state 2.0, with the usual weakness on HALF CENT. This piece is a new discovery. It has never been brushed or "improved" in any way so there are traces of loose dirt in protected areas. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net VF20. A condition census example of this very tough die variety. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 88 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 C-4b R6+ AG3. Large Edge Letters. A couple points sharper but fine to moderate granularity covers the fields and protected areas on both sides while the devices are smooth. No verdigris, but there is a dull dent at AM that has caused a subtle bulge in the field over the end of the pole. Recolored a partially glossy dark bluish steel and olive brown. LDS, Manley state 2.0, with a die clashmark nestled between the upper edge of the cap and the back of the head. The date is clear and the legends are easily readable in spite of the fine roughness. The Large Edge Letters are strong except for the T in TWO and the E in HUNDRED, which are weakened by edge bumps. One of the rarest varieties of the series, very close to Rarity-7, and sure to command attention from advanced collectors of half cents. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 83 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 C-1b R6 F12+. Small Edge Letters. Sharpness F15 or a bit better but there are two vertical scrapes on the mouth and an arc of impressed dentils on the bust fading into the field over the date. These marks are old and blend perfectly into the natural toning. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the eye appeal is excellent. Attractive glossy medium brown blending to very light chocolate brown in protected areas. The date, legends, and Small Edge Letters are all clear. EDS, Manley state 1.0, showing no trace of a bulge at the top of the wreath. The reverse is rotated 20 degrees CCW relative to the normal head-to-foot die orientation. A condition census example of this very rare variety. Graded VF20 by Stack's when they sold it as part of the Schonwalter collection (1/21/2003:1085). Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 99 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841797 C-1 R2 Plain Edge, 1 Above 1 PCGS graded VF30. 1 Above 1 Variety. Choice glossy chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and very attractive with trivial contact marks. The only notable marks are a few very faint hairline scratches on the portrait, none visible without the aid of a strong glass. M-LDS, Manley state 4.0 late, with extensive die cracks and swelling on the obverse and weakness at RICA on the reverse. A very nice example of the popular 1 Above 1 variety. Our grade is F15+, very close to VF20. The 1 Above 1 feature is noted on the PCGS label. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Lot 94 - united states liberty cap half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841795 C-4 R3 Punctuated Date VF20 with Planchet Flaw. Thin Planchet. Glossy chocolate and medium brown mixed with reddish chocolate tones on the obverse. There are a few faint, insignificant hairline scratches on the cap and traces of soft verdigris in a few of the protected areas on the obverse, but overall the surfaces and eye appeal of this piece are quite nice. However it was struck on a defective planchet that has an obvious void that touches the top of the L in LIBERTY and a less-obvious void affecting the dentils over BER (both as struck). The date is bold and the punctuation (comma) following the 1 is strong. LDS, Manley state 2.0. There is an obvious bulge in the field before the portrait and weakness in the center of the reverse, as usual in all but the earliest die state. A nice example of the popular "Punctuated Date" type and a neat mint error. Weight 86.5 grains. Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc.
