Lot 264 - united states liberty cap cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 S-64 R5- No Fraction Bar PCGS Genuine VF Details Environmental Damage. Frosty dark chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are covered with rather uniform fine to moderate roughness, but there is no verdigris and only a few trivial marks, all hidden in the patina. Rare LDS, Breen state V, with a strong radial die crack from the rim through the D in UNITED to the wreath. The date and legends are complete. The fraction is relatively weak, as always on this variety, but it is complete. Our grade is VF30+ sharpness net VG10. The attribution and "No Fraction Bar" feature are shown on the PCGS label. Five points sharper but fine roughness covers the planchet, strongest on the reverse. In addition there are a half dozen shallow scratches in the field under the cap, a dull dig under ER in LIBERTY, and traces of verdigris in protected areas on the reverse. Partially glossy medium to dark olive brown and chocolate with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The date is strong and the legends are clear. EDS, before any swelling in the obverse fields. No corrosion or verdigris, only minor contact marks. The notable ones are a pinprick between the bases of the B & E in LIBERTY, a faint hairline scratch under the ear lobe, and a rim nick over the E in STATES. Lot 281 - united states liberty cap cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841795 S-78 R1 Plain Edge NGC graded F15. Double Struck with a Significant Rotation. Choice glossy dark chocolate brown and steel. Smooth and very attractive, essentially flawless to the unaided eye; it takes a good glass to see any defects. The only marks are a couple extremely faint hairline scratches in the field under the cap, a small rim nick over the E in STATES, and a couple more faint hairline scratches at NE in ONE. Boldly double struck with an 80-degree clockwise rotation between strikes (CW as viewed from the obverse, CCW when looking at the reverse). The date and bust from the first impression are clearly visible in the field before the portrait, and ample strong undertype from the first strike is visible on the right side of the reverse. It doesn't take a glass to see the mint error on this cent. MDS, Breen state III (not that it matters in this case). Our grade is consistent with the slab grade. Lot 260 - united states liberty cap cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841794 S-57 R1 VG10+. Five points sharper but there are several light contact marks around the rims on both sides, and the rims have been carefully smoothed to minimize their impact. The smoothing was skillfully done and it takes a glass to detect the work. The only rim marks remaining visible are a rim nick over the E in STATES, a rim bruise at S-O, and a few small nicks on the rim under the fraction. The surfaces are smooth and the toning is a nice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a couple barely visible waves or "trenches" in the field before the face and a depression over ICA in AMERICA. The date is bold and the legends are complete.
