Lot 4 - united states colonials - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84

1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-19 Rarity-5 F15. Small Planchet Type. Sharpness VF30 or better but there is an obvious bend in the planchet at the left base of the tree that weakens the designs in that area. The opposing area at "AN" is weakened as well and that area is covered with several dull, shallow scratches. Otherwise the surfaces are smooth and the devices are bold, much sharper than usually seen on this tough variety. Later die state with a strong die crack from the right foot of the A in MAS slanting to the rim over the adjacent S. Listed on page 39 in the "Redbook." Weight 69.8 grains.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1788 Connecticut Miller 4.1-K Rarity-5 VG10. Mailed Bust Right. Struck over a 1785 Nova Constellatio Crosby 4-D variety. Sharpness VF20 but much of the planchet displays minor roughness and there is a bend at the rim over the I in AUCTORI. Slightly glossy dark olive brown with lighter brown toning on the devices. The dates of the Connecticut (1788) and of the Nova Constellatio (1785) are complete and clear, and "NOVA" also shows clearly off the Mailed Bust. This variety is often found with traces of Nova Constellatio undertype, but seldom do you find one with both dates clearly visible and enough undertype remaining to allow a positive attribution of the host coin.
