British Post Office in Smirna 1887/96: 20 pa. on 2½ d. purple on blue and 4 pi. on 10 d. dull purple & deep bright carmine vertical pair, used on 2 d. registered postal stationery envelope to Tubingen, Germany all tied by oval framed "REGISTERED / SMYRNA" datestamps (Jan 26, 1900) in black with unsuual manuscript "Smyrna" alongside. Reverse with British PO Constainople transit (Jan 28) and arrival cds. A scarce franking - 40 pa. (1 d.) single letter rate, 2 d. (80 pa.) for registration and 8 piastres (1/7½ d.) to increse the registration rate to £160.
