227: Europe & Overseas | 228 : Chile - The Joseph Hackmey Collection (part 1)

Recess by Henri Gillet from Perkins Bacon Plates 1854 (April): 5 c. Burnt Siena, a horizontal pair with large margins on two sides, just touched at top but with full sheet margin at right, used on 1855 double rate cover from Valdivia to Cassel, Germany endorsed 'Por Vapor via Valparaiso, Panama, Southampton & Ostende' at top; the stamps paying the inland postage and cancelled by target handstamp in black. VALDIVIA straight line handstamp of depatch in red, reverse with 'Valparaiso' British P.O. datestamp (March 31) in black and London transit cds (May 22) in red. Various ratings incl. British '4/8d.' charge in manuscript, and '54¼' silver groschen in blue ink to pay upon receipt. Minor edge wear due to journey but a charming cover to an extraordinary destination for classic period Chile mail. Cert. Jörg Maier (2006), Moorhouse (2010).rnrn
