half cents - Coin Auctions
Lot 79 - united states half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841793 C-2 R3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown and chocolate with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Hints of attractive light bluish steel overtone show on both sides. The frosty surfaces are nearly flawless and the eye appeal is outstanding for the grade. The only imperfections are a microscopic planchet chip on the rim at the top of the reverse and an even smaller chip just inside the border beads over the left side of the O in OF, both as struck, plus a hint of reddish carbon at the right side of the first A in AMERICA. Late die state with obvious fine die rust evident on both sides. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees CW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation, a condition that is often found on this variety. Both sides are rather well centered on the planchet leaving ample borders outside the ring of beads. Our grade is MS60 Choice. The reverse of this half cent was plated in the Ebenezer Gilbert's 1916 reference "The United States Half Cents" (Plate 1, the 1793 "1-3" reverse), and both sides were plated in the 1914 ANS Exhibition of United States and Colonial Coins Catalog (Plate 23, the Crosby 2-A provided by Hillyer Ryder). In addition this is the plate coin for the die variety (the large photos) and for the late die state (the smaller State II photos) in "Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States Half Cents 1793-1857." The attribution and Missouri Cabinet provenance are shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the finest of only 2 graded Mint State for the variety. PCGS #35006. (Note: This half cent has been part of the fabulous Missouri Cabinet since the purchase of the Showers Collection in 1976 but it was misplaced in 1997 and was not included in our sale of that collection in January 2014. The coin was subsequently "rediscovered" after the auction. This offering completes the Missouri Cabinet sale, and we are making copies of this page available for insertion into the January 2014 catalog so that important reference can represent the complete Missouri Cabinet Collection.). Lot 81 - united states half cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #841793 C-3 R3 AU50. Choice glossy light olive brown and medium chocolate. Sharply struck and virtually perfect in every respect. No spots or stains, and the only marks are a few microscopic ticks on the chin, a very tiny pinprick on the neck near the hair, another at the top of the A in HALF and another over the adjacent L. Struck from a relatively early state of the dies for this marriage, clearly earlier than the die state of the two mint state examples in the Missouri Cabinet (our sale 1/24/2014, lots 4 & 5). The obverse fields are smooth and slightly reflective and the top of the cap is more clearly defined than on the Missouri Cabinet examples. The reverse shows only minor rust in the fields (which formed during the earlier use of this die in the C-2 mating). Nicely centered on a flawless planchet. A premium example with just a touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. Sold as "Magnificent Mint State" in the Stack's sale of the "Northern Bay Collection," 3/8/2006:3502. Removed from a PCGS slab graded AU53 (PCGS label #1000.53/25266240 included). Our grade is AU50 Choice. If you want a spectacular 1793 Half Cent that has mint state eye appeal, but you want to avoid paying "high-end Italian sports car money" to get it, this is your chance. Weight 107.4 grains.
