lot # 6558 - ionische inseln vorphilatelie
British Protectorate 1815-1864 1828 (Oct 1): Entire letter from Ithaca to Dublin, Ireland with Military content endorsed "Single Letter" and "Via Otranto", disinfected by slitting and toasting probably at Otranto; struck with circular "ISOLA D'ITACA" in black (with manuscript rate "1/3½" - sterling, with breakdown of same in manuscript on reverse) with oval framed "FRANCA" alongside and hooded "CORFU" datestamp (Oct 6) in black. Framed "Otranto" and "I.T." in red and scarce "Jonia" also in red on obverse, thence via Naples (Oct 21), London (Nov 6) and Dublin arrival (Nov 8) in red where charged "3s." due on receipt. A most unusual routing and destination that opens well for Exhibit display.
