Lot 379 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84

1801 S-224 R1 NGC graded VF25. Rather glossy steel and chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and nearly void of marks giving this cent excellent eye appeal. A small diagonal nick on the cheek is the only mark, and it is insignificant. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks or cuds. Our grade is F15+ choice, very close to VF20. The attribution is shown on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1803 S-243 R2 Stemless Wreath VG8. Sharpness near F12 but covered with fine roughness under a slightly glossy dark olive brown and steel patina. The only marks are a rim nick at ED in UNITED and a dull scratch that arcs through the ribbon left of the fraction. EDS, Breen state I, before any rim cuds on the obverse. The date and legends are clear, including the Doubled Fraction Bar and Stemless Wreath features.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1800/79 S-194 R3 Overdate 80 over 79, Style II Hair VG10. Glossy medium chocolate brown delicately mottled with slightly darker olive brown. No roughness or verdigris, only minor contact marks. The notable ones are a thin diagonal nick on TE in STATES and another inside the top of the wreath. LDS, Breen state VIII. An irregular cud break extends from the second A in AMERICA to slightly beyond the fraction and reaches up to the second 0 in the denominator. Another cud break reaches inside the dentils over the C in AMERICA. This is the plate coin for state VIII in the Breen encyclopedia. The upper part of the reverse is softly struck while the lower half is bold. The date and legends are complete and clear, and the overdate feature is obvious to the unaided eye.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

1802 S-241 R1 Stemless Wreath EF40. Ten points sharper but recolored frosty light olive and chocolate brown with peeps of faded artificial red showing in protected areas. Virtually void of marks. A faint diagonal hairline scratch in the field behind the head and a small planchet void right of the D in UNITED are the best identifying defects. E-MDS, Breen state II, with a die crack through the top of OP to the dentils near the adjacent A. The strike is a bit uneven with weakness at the top of the obverse and bottom of the reverse. The Stemless Wreath and Doubled Fraction Bar features are clear.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

1799 S-189 R2 PCGS graded Poor-1 (EAC Basal State-1). Glossy bluish steel and medium chocolate brown. The surfaces are smooth and void of marks, just heavily worn. Choice for the grade. The upper half of the date is clear but the lower half is worn away, and maybe a third of LIBERTY can be made out. Most of the reverse is worn smooth. Our grade is Fair-2 for the obverse but barely BS-1 for the reverse, so our grade is consistent with the slab grade.
Estimated Value $800-UP.

1802 S-232 R1 F12. Sharpness EF40 but the upper part of the obverse is covered with fine roughness mixed with traces of lacquer, and there is microscopic pitting around UN in UNITED. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and most of the reverse is choice. Partly glossy medium brown and darker chocolate. MDS, Breen state IV. The die clashmarks on the reverse are clear.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1798 S-184 R1 Style II Hair with Small 8 VF20. Sharpness EF40 or a bit better but there are numerous light rim bruises on both sides, none notable but too many to ignore. The only other marks are a collection of dull pinpricks on the neck. Glossy steel and light olive brown. MDS.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1800 S-205 R4 VF20+. Sharpness VF30 but there are some light contact marks scattered over the planchet. The notable ones are a dull vertical nick in the hair under the B in LIBERTY, a minor rim bruise left of the lowest curl, several small pinpricks on the bust, and a few more in the space right of the second S in STATES. Mostly glossy dark steel brown and light olive. MDS, Breen state II. The horizontal die crack from the middle curls is clear but it appears to fade out before reaching the rim, and the die clashmarks in the field before the neck are clear. Removed from an ANACS slab graded VF30 (ANACS label #4140736 included).
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1801 NC-3 R6+ Error Fraction 1/000 G5. Clipped Planchet. Sharpness F12 or a bit better but both sides are covered with moderate granularity. No verdigris. The only mark is a dull scratch across the center of the neck into the hair, and this mark is mostly hidden in the roughness and toning. Slightly glossy chocolate brown. The date and legends are complete and clear. A small, curved planchet clip over BE in LIBERTY just touches the top of that E and reaches the base of the dentils under the error (1/000) fraction. Not perfect but still comparable to the Breen plate coin for this very rare variety. Only 15 examples are known and the finest grades VG8.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
