The obverse is marginally better while the reverse is weaker. Both sides are covered with tiny nicks mixed with traces of microscopic roughness, but there is no verdigris. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with areas of darker chocolate toning on both sides, mostly on the reverse. No roughness or verdigris. The only marks are some fine scratches on the upper part of the reverse, mostly in the field at D-S and at ES-OF-A. LDS, Breen state V. There are strong die cracks along the profile into the field, and the field between two of these cracks is clearly raised as a retained cud. A neat die state. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net VF25+. Variety with E over Inverted E in AMERICA. Rather glossy medium chocolate brown and steel mixed with hints of reddish chocolate brown toning on the reverse. No corrosion, only minor contact marks consistent with the grade. The notable marks are a light rim bruise under the 1 in the denominator and an old pin scratch at the dentil tips over TED in UNITED. EDS, Breen state I. The date and legends are strong and the E over Inverted E feature is obvious. Removed from a PCGS slab graded VF30 (PCGS label #1434.30/22027917 included). Sharpness VF20 but covered with uniform light to moderate roughness under slightly glossy dark olive brown toning. No verdigris, and the only mark of any significance is a short dig in the field before the neck. MDS, Breen state II late. The die failure on the obverse is strong and swelling nearly obliterates STATES. Otherwise the date and legends are complete and clear. Looks better than the net grade might imply. Five points sharper but there is a fine scratch from the top of the hair ribbon to the throat. Otherwise only tiny contact marks of no significance. Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel with traces of frosty lighter reddish brown toning in some of the protected areas, especially on the right side of the reverse. LDS, Breen state III, with a large, strong cud break connecting RICA to the rim. The strike is uneven, strong on the right sides and weaker on the left sides, a result of the die faces being out of proper parallel alignment. Glossy medium chocolate brown. E-MDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks on both sides and a die crack through CA and the fraction bar, but no cud breaks. Sharpness VF30 but there is a patch of very fine reddish corrosion on the leaves under IT in UNITED. The obverse is covered with tiny contact marks, none significant but too many for the sharpness grade. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with splashes of darker chocolate brown toning on the reverse and frosty lighter brown in protected areas. Rare TDS, Breen state VIII. In addition to several die cracks and strong clashmarks there are narrow rim cud breaks under the date, a stronger cud connecting the tops of the A & M in AMERICA to the rim, and a tiny cud extending inside the dentils over the A in STATES. Glossy medium chocolate brown with lighter steel brown and chocolate toning on the devices. The only defects are a few small rim nicks on the reverse, including a couple over ES in STATES and another over the E in AMERICA. None of these marks is at all distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice. MDS, Breen state III, with a narrow rim cud break right of the Y in LIBERTY.
