1798 S-166 R1 Large 8, Style II Hair VF35. Glossy light olive and steel brown with overtones of sea green and light bluish steel. There is very little wear on this cent but the strike is uneven, as often seen on this variety, thanks to dies that were out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not parallel). This improper die alignment probably caused the strong die crack on the reverse which is located at the place where the dies came the closest when striking a cent. The crack must have occurred very early in the marriage and an uncracked example is unknown. No roughness or verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks. The notable ones are a short diagonal scratch in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon and a couple very small nicks on the neck. MDS, Breen state IV, with a strong die crack arcing from the dentils through the E in UNITED, the wreath, and the fraction ending at the rim under the right side of the denominator. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees CCW. The bust, lower half of the 798, and the opposing OF-A on the reverse are all weakly struck.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

1796 S-99 R5 Draped Bust G6. The obverse is sharper but the reverse is weaker due to uniform fine to moderate corrosion, the assigned grade an average of the two. No verdigris or contact marks. The only "defect" is a knife rim over MERI, as struck. Rather glossy light to medium chocolate brown blending to darker chocolate in protected areas. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks on the obverse. The date is complete and clear and the legends are readable.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

1797 S-127 R4 G6. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown, the devices a slightly lighter shade than the protected areas. Smooth and void of any significant marks, just evenly worn. A dull, light rim nick at the D in UNITED is the only defect, and it is trivial. EDS but not quite the earliest, Breen state II, showing a subtle bulge near the dentils before the chin. The date is bold and the legends are complete.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1798 S-154 R4+ Large 8, Style I Hair PCGS Genuine XF Details Smoothed. Lightly cleaned and retoned a rather glossy olive and dark steel brown with lighter reddish brown toning in some of the protected areas on the reverse. Nothing about this cent suggests it was "Smoothed" so I suspect PCGS meant to say "Cleaning." No marks or other defects, and this cent offers nice eye appeal. The date is bold and the legends are complete. LDS, Breen state III, with obvious swelling on the reverse and a radial die crack from the rim to the upper edge of the bust. Our grade is VF20 net F15. The "1st Hair Style" feature is noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $500-UP.

The only mark is a tiny rim nick over the E in STATES. The 6 is clear while the 179 is only partially visible but still easily readable. No more than half the legend on the reverse remains visible. EDS, Breen state I. The die crack from the right top of the second T in STATES to the dentils is clear.
