A known but unidentified medal (Sally Rosenberg 1932 #1308; "Numophylacii Ampachiani" cat. 1830 pt 2 #8987): per Rosenberg the artist is Martin Omeis; per Antoine-Feill (1908) it's "EF" (which Bernhard, "Medaillen und Plaketten" p.213, renders as Carl Enhörning). Rev.: Star of David w/ Heb. letters "HN" (Hazkarat Neshamot), in center; Rom. leg.: "Congreg. Templul. Choral Bucuresci • 50 Bani". The "Mentioning of Departed Souls" is a memorial service occuring during the general morning service on last day of Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot (the 3 pilgrimage festivals), and on Yom Kippur; as it mentions charitable offerings, it is customary for the utterer to promise to give a donation - hence this token. Design is virtually identical to the actual Israeli period piece: on obverse the additional legend reads "Chanukkah Gelt - R.S.K.S.". This was a token issued by the Rabbi Solomon Kluger School as a gift to students, to be used as play-money in games using the Chanukka 'dreidel'. The school is an Orthodox day school in Manhattan (founded 1924), named after the European talmudist and scholar, Rabbi Solomon ben Judah Aaron Kluger ( 1785-1869) who served as the Chief Rabbi of Brody, in Galicia. Obverse bears image of the Hassidic movement's headquarters on 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn; legend on obv. and rev. are in praise of the Rebbe and extoll him as the Messiah. Probably issued to commemorate the Rebbe's (1902- 1994) 90th birthday; towards the end of his life segments of the Chassidic movement he led openly declared him to be the Messiah, although the movement as a whole distances itself from saying such in public. Obverse: 7 lines of Hebrew prayer during the circumcision: "Our Lord and Lord of our forefathers sustain this child [name] for his father and mother" and "Happy will be the father by the progeny of his loins and rejoiced will be the mother by the fruit of her belly. As is written"; Kohn's name in exergue. Reverse: 4-lines in Hebrew surrounded by legend all excerpted from the ceremony prayers, center: "Happy will be your father and your mother and rejoyceful your birth", edge: "Just as you entered into a convenant so shall you partake of the Torah and the Khupa and of good deeds"; Hebrew date "5698" [1837-38] in exergue. Kohn was a prominent German Jewish medalist, uniquely working exclusively on Jewish themes, using Hebrew.
