1796 S-105 R5- Draped Bust G5. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter brown toning on the devices. There is minor roughness in the fields on both sides and a few minor contact marks, but overall this is a nice example for the grade. The notable marks are an "X" very lightly scratched across the obverse centered just left of the ear and a small but sharp rim nick opposite the eye. The bottom edge of the date is starting to fade into the rim but the rest is clear and the legends are easily readable. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1797 S-121b R3- Reverse of 1796 with Gripped Edge VG7. Very slightly sharper but there are three very light scratches in the field before the neck and a couple more at TATE on the reverse. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth, particularly on the reverse where microscopic roughness is mostly hidden under the attractive glossy chocolate brown toning. No verdigris. The date is strong and the legends are complete although STAT is faint. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks on the obverse. The "Grip" marks on the edge are clear.
Estimated Value $150-UP.

1798/7 S-150 R5 Overdate 8 over 7 Fair-2. Glossy medium chocolate brown. No corrosion or verdigris, just a few marks consistent with a heavily worn cent. A short scratch in the hair under IB in LIBERTY, a dull dent under the hair ribbon, and some fine hairline scratches on the reverse are the notable defects. LDS with heavy swelling on the reverse. The date is strong and the overdate is obvious. In fact the date is the strongest feature showing on this cent, but enough of the reverse remains visible to be certain of the correct attribution.
Estimated Value $60-UP.

1796 S-96 R6 Draped Bust PCGS Genuine, G Details, Surface Damage. Sharpness G5 but the edge has been lightly tapped all around creating a high rim that impinges on the date and some of the letters in the legend. No notable marks. The surfaces are decent but a glass reveals uniform extremely faint roughness covering both sides. Slightly glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel with a narrow arc of lighter brown toning on the left side of the reverse. The date is easily readable in spite of the raised rim and the legends are mostly clear (although HALF CENT is faint at best). LDS, Breen state II, with a die crack bisecting the reverse from the T in UNITED to the M in AMERICA. Our grade is G5 sharpness net AG3. One of the rarest varieties of the year, and the finest known grades only F12. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

1796 S-113 R5 Draped Bust VG7. The obverse is weaker but the reverse is stronger, the grade being an average of the two sides. No roughness or verdigris. Just a few contact marks, including an obvious scratch or thin planchet void on the face and a trio of less-significant tiny rim bruises at the top of the reverse. Mostly glossy steel brown and light chocolate. The 6 in the date is slightly weak thanks to a minor die clog affecting its right side but the remainder of the date is strong and the legends are complete. Very rare E-MDS, Breen state II, before any die clashmarks.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1798 S-144 R5+ Large 8 with Style I Hair G4. Slightly sharper but cleaned and retoned a mostly glossy light chocolate and darker steel brown with traces of reddish tan from the old cleaning in a couple of the protected areas. No verdigris, only small contact marks. Most of the contact marks are small rim nicks, the strongest of these over the E in AMERICA. A dull pinprick at the left top of the first S in STATES and another at the bottom of the I in UNITED can help identify this cent. EDS, Breen state I, with an obvious dull wave across the reverse from TA in STATES to the E in AMERICA but no cracks. The date is complete and clear, and the legends are complete except for ONE CENT, which is essentially gone thanks to the bulge caused by the wave across the planchet. Far from perfect but still a decent low grade example of this rare variety.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

1798 S-174 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VG7. Sharpness near VF20 where the details were properly struck up, but the obverse is covered with myriad light scratches, all blended into the natural toning. The major flaw on this cent is the uneven strike. The bottom part of the obverse and opposing upper part of the reverse were poorly struck due to axial die misalignment (the die faces were not parallel). As a result the date is faint with only the 98 partially visible, and most of STATES is gone as well. Glossy dark chocolate brown and steel with lighter chocolate toning on the highpoints. LDS, Breen state V. The die clashmarks are strong and the lower half of the numerator is very thin. An interesting piece in spite of the obverse scratches.
Estimated Value $100-UP.

1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap F12. Clipped Planchet. Sharpness near VF20 but there is a small patch of shallow corrosion at ER in LIBERTY and a larger one from the top of the O in ONE into the leaves above. There are traces of additional microscopic roughness on both sides but overall the remainder of the planchet is smooth and attractive. The only notable contact mark is a light rim bruise before the neck. Mostly glossy light to medium chocolate brown with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. MDS, Breen state IV, with two horizontal die waves in the field before the portrait and one more in the field behind the lower curls. The date and legends are complete and strong. A curved planchet clip reaches inside the dentils left of the date and at STA.
Estimated Value $800-UP.

1796 S-109 R3 Draped Bust VG10+. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown and steel. The obverse is slightly sharper than the reverse but both sides offer excellent eye appeal. No hint of roughness or verdigris and only a few light contact marks. The notable marks are a thin nick high on the neck, a dull one on the shoulder, a shallow diagonal scratch in the leaves left of the O in ONE, and a few very light rim nicks and bruises at the top of the reverse. E-MDS, Breen state II. The reverse die has been lapped but the obverse is still uncracked. The date is strong and the legends are complete. A nice cent, close to F12. Removed from a PCGS slab graded F15 (PCGS label #1404.15/21291811 included).
Estimated Value $600-UP.

1797 S-133 R5 Stemless Wreath VG10. A couple points sharper, perhaps even better on the obverse, but there are a few light contact marks on the obverse. The notable ones are some very fine hairline scratches across the date, a few more in the field left of the lower curls, and a rim nick left of the lower end of the hair ribbon. Only the rim nick is visible without the aid of a glass and the eye appeal of this cent is quite nice for the grade. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with a few splashes of slightly darker olive brown toning on the lower half of the obverse. LDS, Breen state IV late, with a clear radial die crack from the rim over the bust tip to the neck near the bust. Struck on a planchet that shows partial diagonal reeding, Breen's planchet type V. A very nice example of a tough die variety. Graded F12 net VG10 and tied for CC#9 in the Noyes census, his photo #28067.
Estimated Value $800-UP.
