Lot 322 - united states draped bust cents - Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Inc. Pre-Long Beach Auction #84

1797 S-120b R2 Reverse of 1796 with Gripped Edge VG10. Sharpness VF25 but there are a couple dull dents inside the wreath and the planchet is slightly warped. In addition the field before the portrait has been lightly smoothed for some reason that is not apparent. Cleaned and retoned frosty dark steel and olive brown. Sharp but far from choice. LDS, Breen state VI, with all the die cracks and crumbling associated with the late die state. The date and legends are all bold and the "Grip" marks (a series of small depressions and bumps) on the edge are strong.
Estimated Value $80-UP.

1798 S-149 R4+ Large 8 with Style I Hair Fair-2. Sharpness G5, even better in some areas, but the planchet is uneven and very slightly bent thanks to several dull dents. No corrosion or verdigris, and the toning is an attractive glossy medium steel brown and light chocolate. The date is clear. EDS, Breen state I, before any trace of buckling at S-OF-A.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

1796 S-90 R5+ Liberty Cap G6. Sharpness VG8 but faint granularity covers the fields and protected areas on the obverse while the reverse shows light corrosion mixed with several shallow pits. Specks of greenish verdigris can be found in may of the pits. The only obvious mark is a rim dent opposite the tip of the nose. EDS, Breen state I. The reverse is upset (dies oriented head-to-head) as often seen on this rare variety. Slightly glossy reddish chocolate brown and steel with lighter steel brown toning on the devices. The date and legends are complete and easily readable.
Estimated Value $600-UP.

1796 S-112 R4+ Draped Bust G6. Glossy chocolate brown and steel. No corrosion or verdigris, only light contact marks. The notable marks are a light hairline scratch from the hair under the L in LIBERTY down to the bust and a tiny planchet chip over the 7 in the date. LDS, Breen state IV, with strong swelling inside the wreath that obliterates ONE CENT. The date is strong and the legends are complete except for the fraction and ONE CENT, which are gone.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

1797 S-140 R1 PCGS Genuine XF Details Environmental Damage. Rather glossy light olive brown and chocolate, possibly recolored. Covered with uniform very fine roughness but there is no verdigris. The only marks are a few small nicks at LIB and a pair of dull scratches between the bases of the D in UNITED and the adjacent S in STATES. MDS showing minor swelling at TED and S-OF-A. The date is strong. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net VG10. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1798 S-172 R2 Small 8, Style II Hair VG8+. Clipped Planchet. Close to VG10 but there are too many tiny nicks scattered over the obverse for the higher grade. None of the nicks is distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is nice for the grade. No roughness or verdigris. Glossy medium chocolate brown. Rare TDS, Breen state VI, with a cud break connecting ICA to the rim above. A curved planchet clip affects the dentils over ER in LIBERTY and the opposing ones under the fraction.
Estimated Value $80-UP.

1796 S-105 R5- Draped Bust G5. Glossy light to medium chocolate brown with slightly lighter brown toning on the devices. There is minor roughness in the fields on both sides and a few minor contact marks, but overall this is a nice example for the grade. The notable marks are an "X" very lightly scratched across the obverse centered just left of the ear and a small but sharp rim nick opposite the eye. The bottom edge of the date is starting to fade into the rim but the rest is clear and the legends are easily readable. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

1796 S-96 R6 Draped Bust PCGS Genuine, G Details, Surface Damage. Sharpness G5 but the edge has been lightly tapped all around creating a high rim that impinges on the date and some of the letters in the legend. No notable marks. The surfaces are decent but a glass reveals uniform extremely faint roughness covering both sides. Slightly glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel with a narrow arc of lighter brown toning on the left side of the reverse. The date is easily readable in spite of the raised rim and the legends are mostly clear (although HALF CENT is faint at best). LDS, Breen state II, with a die crack bisecting the reverse from the T in UNITED to the M in AMERICA. Our grade is G5 sharpness net AG3. One of the rarest varieties of the year, and the finest known grades only F12. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
